Despite other interest, the 28-year-old playmaker – who underlined his talent again as Victory drew 1-1 with Sydney FC on Saturday night – has made it clear his preference was always to continue playing his football under the stewardship of Kevin Muscat.
And after some to-ing and fro-ing in negotiations it appears there are only some finer details that need to be ironed out for that desire to be fulfilled – an outcome likely to win wide approval among Victory fans.
The timing of an official announcement is uncertain, but sources indicate the player and club are close to a signed contract.
Finkler's agent, Lou Nesci, said before negotoations commenced:
"The level of Gui's performances have never wavered and he has always stayed focused on his football throughout and never let himself be swayed in any way.
"He enjoyed working under Ange Postecoglou and that has continued under Kevin Muscat who he believes is steering the club in the right direction."
It's understood that only Victory's hectic campaign, heading towards the finals in the A-League and its involvement in the AFC Champions League, has delayed ratification of an agreement.
Nesci confirmed on Sunday that Finkler's commitnent to the club and its cause remained undimmed with the new deal close to being agreed.
