The Germany international suffered the problem in Monday's (AEST) 1-1 draw against Cagliari.

A statement from the club read: "The tests done on
Mario Gomez confirmed a grade two tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

"The striker will wear a brace for two weeks before beginning a rehabilitation programme to bring him back up to match fitness gradually.

"The recovery period is expected to last six to seven weeks."

Gomez, who joined the Tuscan outfit on a 20 million euros ($28.6 million) transfer deal from Bayern Munich this northern summer, is set to miss seven league games as well as three UEFA Europa League Group E encounters.

The 28-year-old could return to play in time for Fiorentina's home game against Napoli on 30 October.

The good news for Fiorentina coach
Vincenzo Montella is that Colombian winger
Juan Cuadrado will only be out for three weeks.

Cuadrado dislocated his shoulder at the weekend but tests done ruled out any fracture.

Fiorentina hosts Portuguese side Pacos Ferreira on Friday in their Europa League Group E opener before travelling to Bergamo to face Atalanta this weekend.
