The 63-year-old Shilton, who played a record 125 times for his country, admitted driving under the influence of alcohol when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

He was caught on 24 February in Colchester, a town northeast of London, after an anonymous tip-off to police. Shilton had been drinking wine at a family celebration throughout the day but said he did not think he was over the limit.

Shilton was also fined £1,020 ($1,485).

The goalkeeper played more than 1,000 competitive matches for 11 different clubs in his career.
