Culina tees up a loan deal

Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina says he has sorted out a post-A-League deal to keep his World Cup hopes alive, but won't yet say which club it is with.

Culina's need to find regular football became urgent with Gold Coast United's A-League semi-final defeat last weekend ending their season a month earlier than the midfielder would have liked.

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek's directive that World Cup wannabes need to be playing regularly in the lead-up to the tournament in June has led to several A-League players looking for short-term deals elsewhere.

The former Dutch-based playmaker confirmed on Wednesday he had organised a transfer - believed to be just a short-term loan - but was tight-lipped as to where and when he would make his move.

"I know exactly what I'm doing. I'm not going to say anything yet," Culina said from the Socceroos' camp on the Gold Coast.

"I need to notify the club (Gold Coast), talk about it with the club and make sure everything's right with them before I head off."

Already ex-Brisbane defender Craig Moore and Central Coast's Dean Heffernan have quit the A-League for Europe.

Perth's Jacob Burns and Mile Sterjovski and Sydney FC's Simon Colosimo and Alex Brosque are among those scrambling for the exits to comply with Verbeek's wishes.

Burns and Sterjovski's Glory also had their A-League season finished last weekend.

But Colosimo and Brosque are set to progress far deeper into the finals, with at least two more matches remaining in Sydney FC's domestic campaign.

Culina is almost certain to captain the Socceroos in their critical Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia in Brisbane next week, as one of the most experienced players in the 27-man squad training at the Gold Coast ahead of the game.

The 29-year-old admitted it would be a great honour if given the nod, with other captaincy candidates Lucas Neill, Harry Kewell and Moore not in the predominantly A-League squad.

"I'd definitely put my hand up, but there's a few experienced boys in the squad who've been around for a while so Pim's going to have to make a decision," Culina said.

"With this sort of experience, the team captains itself. The role of captain, he's there to wear the armband, to lead out the team.

"But on-field we're all captains. We've all got to stand up and do our part."
