Popovic says Wanderers must build on win

The defending champion Brisbane went into Saturday night's clash against the newcomer as the shortest priced favourites in A-League history.

But a committed Western Sydney side contained the Roar's big gun players Besart Berisha and Thomas Broich extremely well and showed its compact defensive style could close down the best the league had to offer.

Former Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC striker Mark Bridge claimed a place in the club's history books when he headed home a lovely cross from Youssef Hersi in the 19th minute after Brisbane's defence gave him too much latitude in the box.

The visitor could have won by two or even three goals, a point stunned Roar coach Rado Vidosic volunteered after the shock loss which some were claiming the biggest upset in A-League history.

Whatever spin you put on it, Western Sydney was clearly superior for much of the contest, its defence able to break up Brisbane's normally dangerous passing game.

Popovic though resisted the temptation to play up the enormity of the win after critics gave his side no hope of winning at Suncorp Stadium where Brisbane had lost just three of its previous 34 games.

"It's three points, it's three great points, our first ever win as a club, our first ever goal as a club, but we won't be getting ahead of ourselves," said Popovic.

"It's a bit of history but it's only three points and we have to build on this.

"Our fans went home disappointed last weekend with our derby defeat and I'm sure the fans .. would have enjoyed seeing their team put on a performance which richly deserved a victory.

"I'm sure they'll all be looking forward to coming out to Parramatta Stadium and supporting us next week."

Popovic said keeping a clean sheet against the most potent side in A-League history was as satisfying as getting the win.

"It is, it's very satisfying," he said.

"You go through stages in the game in the first half where we totally dominated but you always felt with Brisbane you needed that second or third goal.

"Towards the end of the game the players showed an amazing resilience to hold out a very, very good side.

"You know Brisbane still a very good side, a great side.

"Just because we won, that doesn't change and we have to build on the this victory and keep going forward."

Vidosic, who conceded the defeat could have been far more embarrassing, struggled for answers after the loss.

"They should have punished us with a few more goals," he said.

"I don't know if it was a little bit of fatigue or complacency.

"We need to have a good look at the video and talk to the players and find out."
