Mehmet dismisses 'physical' claim

With the season only three rounds old, Glory's uncomprimising captain Jacob Burns has already accumulated three yellow cards, with his no-nonsense approach striking fear into rivals.

Defender Steve Pantelidis has a history littered with yellow and red cards, Dean Heffernan is never one to take a backward step, while striker Billy Mehmet offers the Glory a strong target up front.

According to reports, Sydney FC is bracing for a physical encounter when the sides meet at ANZ Stadium.

But Mehmet was quick to refute the suggestion that Glory was overly rough.

"I don't know where they got that from to be honest," Mehmet told reporters.

"If you look at the stats, I think you'll find we're actually around fifth in terms of fouls committed in the league.

"If we need to be physical, we will be, but we're not a physical side.

"We pass the ball around. That's the main thing we do."

Sydney and Newcastle Jets lead the A-League in fouls committed this season, but both Perth and Sydney have accumulated nine yellow cards each.

Glory sits equal on points with ladder-leading Adelaide United, following last week's 2-0 win over Melbourne Heart.

Sydney has only managed three points in this current campaign, but boasts marquee signing Alessandro Del Piero in its ranks.

Rather than being daunted at coming up against the former Italy international, Mehmet said Glory was looking forward to it.

"Playing against Del Piero is going to be a good thing for a lot of the boys," Mehmet said.

"He can score goals and he can drop deep and create things, so we've just got to try and get in his face and stop him.

"But they've got other players who are dangerous as well, so it's not just all about Del Piero."

Last weekend's victory over Heart will certainly be a huge confidence boost for Ian Ferguson's men going into the Sydney match, with Mehmet not only pleased by his own form, but the team's as well.

"With Shane (Smeltz) out I've come in and scored a couple of goals and I'm happy with the way things have been going," he said.

"I just hope I can continue doing that, but the main thing is for us to continue playing the way we have been as a team and go out there on Sunday and pick up another three points.

"We're passing the ball around well and creating a lot of chances.

"I scuffed one just before I scored against Heart on Sunday which I was disappointed with, but the main thing is we are creating chances and as a striker, if you're getting chances, you'll convert one of them eventually."
