Wanderers complete Gibbs signing

3 October 2012-SBS

Western Sydney Wanderers confirmed the signing of Joey Gibbs from NSW Premier League club Marconi Stallions.

Gibbs, who scored four goals for Wanderers as a trial player in the pre-season match against Nepean in July, secured a one-year deal with the A-League club.

“I’m definitely excited about being part of a new club and am looking forward to developing my football over the next 12 months,” Gibbs said. “It was a little difficult at the beginning but that is what being on trial is about.

"I knew if I went away and kept working hard that my chance would come and I’m very thankful that Tony and the rest of the staff are giving me that opportunity.

“You set goals for yourself at the beginning of the year and one of mine was to play well for Marconi and give myself every chance of securing a contract with an A-League club again.

“I want to repay the Wanderers for providing me with this chance and I will be doing everything in my power to be at my best for the Wanderers.”

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic was impressed with Gibbs’s trial form and is delighted to now have him as part of the squad.

“We had Joey here with us early on and we stuck with our policy of not jumping in and rushing to sign him,” Popovic said. “He went back and had an outstanding end to the year with Marconi helping them win the State League title.

“He is someone with A-League experience and someone who has spent time at other clubs so he knows what it takes at this level.

“We are not bringing him in just to make up the numbers and we see him as someone that will make a big contribution to the Wanderers this season.”
