Central Coast Mariners will be captained by experienced midfielder John Huthinson, succeeding long-serving skipper Alex Wilkinson who now plays for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the K-League.
Hutchinson, 32, has been with the Mariners since the club's inaugural campaign in 2005-2006 and has amassed almost 150 A-League games.
"'Wilko' (Alex Wilkinson) was a true Club man, a champion of a guy and he led the team on and off the park," Hutchinson said, at the team's 2012 Fan Day in Tuggerah, where his appointment was announced.
"They're big boots to fill but if I can fill them half way I will do a good job.
"I found out last night off 'Arnie' (Graham Arnold). I'm very honoured to become the club captain.
"It hasn't sunk in yet. I went home last night and spoke to my mum and dad, and my wife. It's a good feeling and I'm just looking forward to having a good season with the club."
Patrick Zwaanswijk was confirmed as vice-captain, with the veteran Dutch defender and Hutchinson spearheading a leadership group that includes Daniel McBreen, Joshua Rose and Mile Sterjovski.
"I believe it is a natural decision," Arnold said of Hutchinson's appointment.
"John Hutchinson has been at this club since day one, he typifies the Mariners culture and he helps keep our culture going."
Central Coast Mariners opens its 2012-2013 A-League season away to Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday 6 October at Parramatta Stadium before its forst home game on Sunday 14 October against Perth Glory at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium.
Goalkeeper Mat Ryan, defender Pedj Bojic and midfielder Oliver Bozanic look to have played their last games for Central Coast Mariners as the A-League champion faces a raft of departures.
