On the marfk ... striker Nick Ward (Getty)
Perth Glory beat Melbourne Victory 2-1 in a pre-season match played behind closed doors at AAMI Park on Wednesday.
Victory had the better chances in a scrappy opening to the first half with Brazilian midfielder Guilherme Finkler sending his direct shot straight at Glory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.
Marco Rojas then made the same mistake, firing his shot into the waiting arms of Vukovic.
Glory promptly punished the host side for its inability to finish chances when Nick Ward opened the scoring on the 10-minute mark.
Victory went on the attack again but fell further behind when Perth Glory’s Japan international Ryo Nagai – on trial during Glory’s two-match tour of Melbourne – was brought down in the penalty area midway through the first half. Billy Mehmet made no mistake from the spot to put the visitor 2-0 up.
Moments later Victory attacker Marcos Flores was fouled by Glory captain Jacob Burns to give the home side a penalty of its own, which the Argentine play maker coolly converted.
Burns was handed a yellow card after a foul on Jonathan Bru early in the second half, as both sides made changes to their line-ups.
Victory substitute Archie Thompson became his team’s third player to shoot directly at Vukovic after a neat passing exchange with Flores, before the latter’s corner flew over the head of striker Danny Allsopp.
