On the mark ... Adelaide's Jeronimo Neumann scored one of Adelaide's six goals (Adelaide United)
Adelaide United’s preparations for the AFC Champions League quarter-finals continued to gather momentum after the Reds humbled Brisbane Roar 6-2 in a goal fest at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night.
The trial match was expected to be a tight contest but it quickly turned into a thrill-a-minute affair with a multitude of goalmouth action at both ends.
The Reds flew out to a 3-0 lead at the break thanks to Fabian Barbiero’s opener and two goals from an unfamiliar source in defender Iain Fyfe while Brisbane could not make the most of its chances.
Three goals soon became five as Argentine import Jeronimo Neumann scored for the second successive game before Iain Ramsay produced a sweet curling finish to beat Roar keeper Michael Theo with 13 minutes remaining.
The A-League champion made a brief resurgence courtesy of super sub Rocky Visconte who struck twice within the space of three minutes.
But a cleverly executed opportunist's goal from striker Sergio van Dijk in injury time gave the Reds their sixth of the night.
The emphatic victory gives the Reds plenty of confidence as it prepares for the first leg of its ACL quarter-final against Uzbejistan's Bunyodkor at Hindmarsh Stadium on 19 September.
While there was plenty happening in the front half of the pitch, the Reds’ defence was also made to work hard as Brisbane tried to manufacture opportunities.
Goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic reeled off a couple of trademark saves, including one off sharpshooter Besart Berisha from the penalty spot early in the second half.
The Reds host Central Coast Mariners on Wednesday night in what will be their final hit out before the clash with Bunyodkor.
