New challenge... Del Piero is relishing the opportunity to raise the level of Australia football (Getty)
Sydney FC coach Ian Crook wants to give star signing Alessandro Del Piero licence to attack and play without restriction when the Italian superstar links up with the A-League club.
Del Piero is expected to arrive in Sydney in little over a week, after committing to a two-year deal.
New Sydney FC coach Crook said he was likely to use Del Piero in a central attacking position.
"We need to give him some licence," Crook said.
"We have got a couple in there with him and (Croatian import) Lovrek (Krunoslav).
"They are what I call points of difference so, for me, you don't want to restrict those people.
"Obviously we'll talk when he comes in, in terms of our shape and our structure.
"There's never a headache when it's something like this, because it's just great to have him here."
Chairman Scott Barlow said the feedback on Del Piero's signing had been incredible, with chairmen and chief executives from across the league sending their congratulations.
He was confident Sydney would not lose out financially despite committing to a contract of around $2 million a year.
"We think the benefits will be worth the investment and we thought through all of that before we made him the offer that we did. So were confident it's the right move," Barlow said.
While Del Piero is no youngster at 37, Barlow said the Juventus great was still a world class player who had the ability to perform at the highest level.
"That's evidenced by the fact that there was so much interest in him from the English Premier League to Serie A and others," Barlow said.
While it's been several months since Del Piero has played, Crook was confident his prize recruit would be in good shape.
"Juve finished their season a while ago now, but I'm sure with the type of professional he is, he would certainly have been ticking over," Crook said.
He said it wasn't ideal that Del Piero may only get to play in one of Sydney's three remaining pre-season games.
"But he's such a great pro I think he'll fit into everything that we do really comfortably and we'll try and get him as much game time between now and the start of the season as we possibly can," Crook said.
