Sydney FC target ... Alessandro Del Piero (Getty Images)
Sydney FC expects to know by Saturday whether it has convinced Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero to sign with the A-League club for the coming season.
Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata spoke at length with Del Piero's brother and agent Stefano in a video conference on Wednesday night in an effort to lure the 37-year-old striker to the Sky Blues.
Del Piero played a record 513 matches for Serie A giant Juventus and has been capped 91 times for Italy.
Two months after becoming a free agent, Del Piero is still looking for a new club and Pignata is keen to pull off the biggest signing in the A-League's history.
"Overnight we had two video conferences lasting about two hours discussing the possibility of bringing Alessandro Del Piero to Sydney FC for the 2012-2013 season," Pignata said on Thursday.
"We spoke about football, as well as the Sydney lifestyle and the ability for him to leave a lasting legacy in the game.
"We presented him with what we think is a good package and we should get an answer within 48 hours."
Del Piero departed Juventus after the Coppa Italia final in May and has since been linked to moves to the Middle East, China, Argentina, the United States and Switzerland.
UEFA Champions League group stage qualifier Celtic is the latest club to flag its interest with manager Neil Lennon keen to add up to three players to his squad, although he was tight-lipped on any mention of Del Piero.
The Sky Blues have an available marquee spot, which falls outside the salary cap, after Nicky Carle's shift to UAE club Baniyas this week.
