Positive talks ... Alessandro Del Piero (Getty)
Sydney FC is hoping that the club's dream of landing the prize signature of Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero was still on track after a meeting with his representative late on Wednesday night.
Chairman Scott Barlow and chief executive Tony Pignata spoke with Del Piero's agent and brother Stefano in a video conference about a proposed deal believed to be worth a staggering $2 million for the forthcoming A-League season.
Del Piero, who is clubless after a magnificent career with his only team Juventus, is considering another big offer from Swiss side Sion.
But Sydney has made a late, late move for the 2006 FIFA World Cup winner after the sudden departure this week of Nicki Carle to Baniyas Sports Club in the United Arab Emirates.
Leading player agent Lou Sticca, who is involved in the negotiations, said the Sydney officials were well received by Del Piero's representative.
”The dream is still very much alive,” Sticca said.
”Barlow and Pignata left a good impression on Del Piero's people, they did a top job.
”Sydney certainly mean business so let's keep our fingers crossed.”
Sydney should know if it has scored the biggest coup in A-League history by Friday.
Del Piero became a free agent after his contract with Juventus expired at the end of the last European season.
