Manny Muscat, Ben Sigmund and Andrew Durante, along with the Jets Tiago Calvano, all saw red in a fiery pre-season clash at Coffey Park, Weston.

The match erupted, when Muscat and Sigmund took exception to Tiago's strong challenge and a melee involving most players ensued. Durante was then sent off in the second half after retaliating to a challenge.

Phoenix General Manager David Dome said today that the Club has taken the incidents very seriously and has taken strong disciplinary steps to ensure that it does not happen again.

“Notwithstanding the play that led to the incidents, the Club in no way condones any kind of retribution or fighting in a match,” Dome said.

“It is totally unacceptable and we took action immediately following the match.”

The four players who were red carded in the match – could still face further sanctions with the Football Federation Australia (FFA) match review set to meet this morning.

The three Phoenix players face the possibility of missing most of the games on its upcoming pre-season tour to India.

“The day after the match Ricki Herbert addressed the entire squad and expressed his displeasure,” Dome said.

“He was unequivocal that incidents of this type will not be accepted by any player regardless of their seniority in the team.”

Herbert has also spoken individually to the three players involved.
