Incoming Newcastle coach Gary van Egmond will inherit an in-form A-League side after the Jets defeated Central Coast Mariners 1-0 to claim F3 derby honours at Ausgrid Stadium.

A first-half goal by impressive Jets striker Jeremy Brockie proved the difference in front of 14,421 fans in a scrappy encounter that lacked the intensity of some of the sides' fieryclashes in the past.

The match was the Jets' last under caretaker coach Craig Deans, with former coach van Egmond officially taking the reins from Monday as replacement for the sacked Branko Culina.

And while van Egmond will look to make his own mark on the side,he will be comforted knowing he has a solid base to work from based on Sunday's performance, the Jets' second win from their opening three games of the season.

The result left last season's grand finalists Central Coast withonly a single point from their opening three games, and they look to be badly missing captain and defender Alex Wilkinson (hand) and playmaker Mustafa Amini (groin).

The match was error riddled from the get-go, with the best earlychance falling to the Jets in the 18th minute after a defensive howler from Oliver Bozanic, but striker Labinot Haliti wasted it after opting to go himself rather than pass to an unmarked Ryan Griffiths.

Both sides continued to give away possession in crucial areas and the Mariners were made to pay when Brockie scored his first goal of the season in the 25th minute.

Brad Porter, deputising at centre back in the absence of Wilkinson, hit a poor pass straight into Brockie's path and the New Zealander did well to beat Porter and finish with a clever chip shot.

The mistakes continued from both sides and Daniel McBreen almost equalised in the 34th minute, sending a shot just wide after Tarek Elrich coughed up the ball.

A sharp-looking Brockie almost added a second, having a close range effort saved after an exquisite turn while Sung-Hwan Byun also forced a good save from Matt Ryan with a free kick on the stroke of halftime.

The Mariners had a great chance to equalise in the 54th minute, but Matt Simon blasted over the bar from close range after a neat one-two with McBreen.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold introduced exciting youngster Bernie Ibini and the striker provided some spark, testing Kennedy with a hand-stinging drive.

But the Jets, steered superbly by Kasey Wehrman and Ben Kantarovski in central midfield, always looked in control and held on to claim maximum points.

FFA unveiled the strip the Socceroos will play in at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, so TWG thinks it's a perfect time to take a look at the history of the green and gold jersey over the years.
