Uncertainty over Newcastle's A-League future failed to fire up the Jets as they were held to a dour scoreless draw with Brisbane Roar at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Following a dramatic week in which the club's dire financial situation was revealed, the Jets couldn't manage to give 7066 fans something to cheer about and ensured they remained winless after five rounds.

Branko Culina's side finished the match with 10 men after Ruben Zadkovich was shown his second yellow card for a late lunge on Luke Devere in the 82nd minute.

Roar remains unbeaten but was unlucky not to come away with a win after Brazilian striker Reinaldo hammered a header into the underside of the crossbar in the 52nd minute.

Both sides pushed hard for a winner in the late stages, with Newcastle's Iraqi substitute Ali Abbas forcing a good save out of Michael Theoklitos before Ben Kennedy denied Mitch Nichols at the other end.

Jets coach Branko Culina handed striker Zhang Shuo his debut off the bench with 20 minutes remaining and the former China international made an instant impact with some dangerous touches.

He unleashed Tarek Elrich with a clever ball but Jeremy Brockie just failed to get on the end of the defender's dangerous cross.

Ange Postecoglou also introduced a new signing with Costa Rica's Jean Carlos Solorzano coming on in the 76th minute, but his only impact came when he was booked for diving in the 86th minute.

A poor first half reflected the dour mood surrounding the Jets, with both sides giving away possession too cheaply and struggling to make an inroads in attack.

The only brief sights on goal came from Jets captain Michael Bridges, who had one long range effort tipped away by Theoklitos in the eighth minute.

Roar's brightest moment came when Thomas Broich looked set to pull the trigger from close range after a squared ball from Henrique but Jets midfielder Kasey Wehrman arrived just in time to kill the danger.

Jets owner Con Constantine watched on from the stands after a tumultuous week.

Football Federation Australia had to step in to cover the cost of hosting the match, but player and staff wages have not been paid for two weeks.

The club is set to meet with FFA on Monday while the staff and players have been told they will be paid what they are owed by early this week.
