Guatemala held United States to a 1-1 draw in Group A of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.

A strong US side took the lead in Guatemala City when Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey converted Fabian Johnson's pass five minutes before half-time.

But it failed to add to that goal and home substitute Marco Papa nicked a point for his side with an 83rd-minute free-kick.

US now has four points from its first two matches, with Guatemala its first points of the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Jamaica also has four points after fighting out a goalless draw with Antigua & Barbuda in St John's.

Mexico made it two wins from two in with a 2-1 victory over El Salvador in Group B.

El Tri took the lead through Jesus Zavala after an hour's play in San Salvador but was pegged back five minutes later when Alfredo Pacheco netted a free-kick for the host.

With 82 minutes gone Hector Moreno headed home the winner.

Costa Rica moved second in the group with a 4-0 win in Guyana.

Alvaro Saborio grabbed a hat-trick, scoring in 20th, 26th and 52nd minutes, with Joel Campbell rounding off the scoring with 13 minutes remaining.

"It was a very important match to us. I saw a united group that played good football and knew how to take a solid win," said Costa Rica boss Jorge-Luis Pinto.

"You can be sure the team will improve to get the competitive form they need to reach Brazil 2014."

In Group C, Panama claimed its second win, beating Cuba 1-0.

Nelson Barahona netted the winner in the 58th minute.

That puts the Panamanians two points clear at the summit after Canada's surprise 0-0 draw against Honduras in Toronto.
